Lincoln School News for October 7-11, 2019

This week marks the start of fall parent-teacher conferences. Your child's classroom teacher will be reaching out to you to schedule a time to meet within the next few weeks to discuss your child's progress. We have reserved two half-days for these meetings this month and next month, but we understand that being flexible with dates/times is essential in order to meet the needs of our families, therefore your appointment time may not be on the reserved 1/2 days.

Thank you for making every effort to attend the conference during your scheduled time. Our partnership is key to your child's academic, social and emotional growth.

Spelling Team
Each year Lincoln School has a spelling team made up of 3rd, 4th and 5th graders.  Students practice at lunch time during the fall and early winter. In January, we have a spelling bee, in front of the school, to determine which three spellers (plus an alternate) will compete at the regional Cloverleaf spelling bee.

On Tuesday, October 8th, interested students are invited to come to the media center at lunch recess to get a list of words that will be on our qualifying test.

Then, on Tuesday, October 15th, there will be a spelling test based on this list.  The top 12 spellers will be on the team, and then compete in the January school-wide bee.

The regional bee is usually in February, and our three top spellers (plus alternate) will continue to practice until the bee.

Mrs. Gruchot is the spelling team coach.  If you or your students have any questions, you can call her at 926-3725, email at jgruchot@stjoebears.com, or stop into the Media Center!

Halloween - Thursday, October 31
All kids can dress up. Be mindful of costumes and especially those that require make-up. We are asking that kids are dressed up all day so simple is best. Children may want to go without the make-up or the bulky parts of their costumes for school. Young 5/Kindergarten, 1st and 2nd Grades will have Maker Stations in the morning.  Parties will be at various times and will be scheduled by classroom teachers. All parents are welcome to attend the parade which will be (weather permitting) outside. The parade will begin at 3:20pm and parents may check their kids out with the classroom teacher after the parade.

Join One World in celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month at the Lincoln Township Library on Thursday,  Oct 10th from 6:00 to 7:30pm. Children of all ages can join their families in spending time learning about Hispanic personalities who have influenced the world. There will be snacks, crafts, fun experiments, performances and much more! To learn more about One World, please visit: https://oneworldprogram.org/
We are in Need of Certified Life Guards!
The month of May always becomes incredibly busy. With state testing and NWEA testing, spring field trips and class activities, 3rd grade swimming/water safety instruction has become more and more difficult to schedule. For that reason, we have moved the program to October. We are in need of certified life guards to assist during the weeks of October 21st and 28th. SJPS will pay for fingerprinting that is necessary in order to work with students. If you are a certified life guard and could volunteer to help our program, we would greatly appreciate it. If you are interested, please contact Amanda Mortimore via email at amortimore@sjschools.org.

Students and Their Families to Get Hands-On with STEM
KALAMAZOO – Helping children understand STEM – Science, Technology, Engineering and Math – concepts can be a challenge for parents. But, help is on the way for families in the Kalamazoo area and beyond through the first-ever STEM QUEST on Saturday, November 9 from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at Kalamazoo Valley Community College’s Texas Township campus.

The daylong event, organized by the STEM division of the Michigan Crossroads Council, Boy Scouts of America, will give all youth in grades K-12 and their parents or caregivers opportunities to get hands-on experience with building and creating through this expansive discovery makerspace using creative technology, various electronics, underwater robotics, and more.

Jason Bishop, KVCC Professor of Chemistry, said KVCC is partnering with the MCC’s STEM division as a way to highlight the STEM opportunities available at the college. On a more personal level, he said he wanted to give back to Scouting for what he received during his time as both a Cub Scout and Boy Scout. The timing was right as he had just stepped back from his role as Phi Theta Kappa Faculty Advisor.

“We will have 30-plus vendors at the event that are going to each be demonstrating areas of the STEM field that they are specializing in,” Bishop said. “A lot of people know that STEM is important, but I don’t think they know how it connects to everything in their lives and how broad it is. It includes everything from welding and plumbing to electrical work to the medical field.

Cost of STEM QUEST is $10 per person. The KVCC Cafeteria will be open and participants can also bring a sack lunch or snacks and water if they would like.
