Lincoln School News for March 26

Virtual Learning Week 2

Hello Lincoln School Families,
As an elementary team, our collective focus for week two and three of our shutdown is Family Time! We hope that you and your family are enjoying this “found time” together as much as possible. We understand that there are many strains for all of us in finding a balanced approach to work, learning, and playing during this time in our country’s history. We appreciate all you are doing as a family to stay connected to one another, to our school family, and to learning in general.

Staying Strong & Healthy in Uncertain Times
Staying positive and upbeat in times of uncertainty can be a challenge. We know how hard you are working to stay calm in face of worry and to be present with your children in face of competing demands on your time. Thank you for ALL you are doing! There’s no recipe book or “one size fits all” solution that we can offer. However, please know that we are here as a school community to help in any way that we can. Our elementary school Social Workers are busy working with the rest of the SJPS Guidance department to provide social and emotional learning (SEL) resources and supports for families, including weekly SEL lessons linked by the classroom teachers and a comprehensive list of mental health resources posted on our district website www.sjschools.org.

Your children will be taking direction from you during these challenging times. Please consider minimizing conversations about your stress and worry while little ears are present. In addition, please try to limit access to news coverage for your child and do what you can to answer any questions your child may have with information from reputable sources.

Helping Young Kids Through Coronavirus Infographic provides some additional guidance for families.

How Much is Enough?
Our teachers are working to provide options for you and your family to keep learning alive during this time away. The goal is enrichment and practice so that your child stays strong academically and has a routine. Please know that it is not the expectation that you do school all day, every day or that you complete every assignment that is offered. We are simply asking you to stay connected with us as a school family and are focused on doing something that inspires your child’s math and literacy development each school day.

Remember that if you’re baking or cooking together, getting out to explore nature, making a project, or doing anything else that requires thinking, planning, and discovery, it counts as learning! Getting outside together is not only a great way to learn, it is good for our mental health too! Just remember to keep your physical distance from those who you see that don’t live with you and to wash your hands coming back inside.

An important message we share with all families:
Feeding Our Bears Continues
We will continue to offer ‘grab and go’ meals on Mondays and Thursdays from 11:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. at Lincoln School (1102 Orchard Avenue in St. Joseph). Families will have the opportunity to pick up several free student meals to last them throughout the week. Please note that meals will not be available during spring break week (April 6-10).

Please click here for other lunch programs available throughout the county.

For additional updates related to our district’s response to COVID-19, please be sure to check our district’s website, sjschools.org.

Michigan School Grade System
The Michigan School Grades System was started in 2018. Schools receive up to five letter grades and three ranking labels based on various school performance components, but no overall letter grade. The 2018-19 reports became publicly available (www.mischooldata.org) beginning Monday, March 23rd. We have so much to celebrate as a school family!

Stay Informed!
The COVID-19 pandemic is uncharted waters for all of us and a very dynamic situation. Information seems to change daily. Thank you for your efforts to stay connected to credible news sources and to follow recommendations designed to help you stay safe. Together, we can flatten the curve! See sjschools.org for access to CDC and other news sources.

In addition to the sources we mentioned last week, Michigan and Berrien County have also set up COVID-19 hotlines.

Ren Baldwin Student Technology Festival
This is a great time to work on a project for our technology festival.
Ren Baldwin projects are due April 15th! The festival provides an opportunity for students and teachers to showcase how technology is being used and integrated to demonstrate learning in St. Joseph Public Schools. Digital projects are submitted via an online form for either showcasing or judging and those submissions are then displayed and honored at a community event held each spring. Visit tinyurl.com/rbtechfest2020 for more information.

Planning for 2020-2021
If you haven’t already, please help us with our enrollment projections by responding to our Family Survey letting us know what your family’s plans for next year are. The survey was sent via email and is available via this link. Only one response per household is needed.

It is the policy of the St. Joseph Public School District that no person shall, on the basis of race, color, religion, national origin or ancestry, sex, disability, height, weight, or marital status be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to, discrimination during any program, activity, service or in employment.

Lincoln School News - March 18, 2020

Welcome to our first virtual learning week of the year! While we will miss seeing all of you in person very much, we wish you all the best during this time away and hope that your family can enjoy the extra time together.   If you have school questions during this time, please reach out to me.  chubble@sjschools.org

Remote Learning Resources & Guidance
A huge thank you to our Lincoln School staff and PTO for all that they have done to provide resources and guidance to families over the past few days. Our first official week of virtual learning begins on Wednesday, March 18th. Many families have shared their child’s “classroom” spaces at home via social media and have developed plans to have structured days Monday - Friday at home.
Remember, we aren’t expecting rigorous learning all day, every day. Even here at school we take time for recess, lunch, snack, class meetings, and personal connections. When building your schedule, consider time for connections and recreation, too!

Our focus during the time away is to practice and enrich learning that has already occurred this school year. Our teacher teams will communicate with families each week to share options and to keep us connected as a school family. Additional information is posted below.

Movement and a change of scenery can do wonders for learning! Spreading learning out throughout the day instead making one long chunk will be better for your child’s focus, concentration, and overall attitude about the task. Please consider having a few different areas of your home designated for specific tasks - that will feel more like school. For example, your child can do his/her daily reading in a cozy spot, computer tasks at a table or desk, and creative work in the kitchen or yard.

Computer access is a potentially powerful tool for self-directed learning, keeping in mind that your child will need monitoring to ensure active learning is occurring.

It is important to keep your child in a normal routine and schedule during this time.  Here is an example of a daily checklist you may want to use to keep a routine:

*Core 5 20 minutes
*Reading 20 minutes - take a Reading Counts Test?
*Math Choice 20 minutes (IXL, Mobymax, Flash cards)
*Alternate Art/Music/Gym Lesson activity each day
*20-30 minutes of fresh air

Student and Family Expectations During the Shutdown
The following plan was put together to help families know what to expect during the shutdown. Most of your communication from school regarding learning will come from your child’s classroom teacher. Here’s what you can expect each week:

Young Fives - Third Grade
Plan to check teacher communication channels weekly for learning activities.

Enrichment and practice activities will be posted by teachers each week on Wednesday by 8:00 a.m.

Please plan to help students complete activities by Wednesday of the following week as indicated by the teacher.

Fourth & Fifth Grade

Plan to check teacher communication channels weekly for learning activities.

Students will log-in and check Google Classroom each week.

Enrichment and practice activities will be posted by teachers each week by Wednesday 8:00 a.m.

Complete enrichment activities by Wednesday of the following week unless otherwise indicated by the teacher.

School announcements and information will come via our blog. District updates will come via the blog and/or School Messenger as needed. Please be sure you are staying in the loop by checking your email on a regular basis.

Art, P.E. and Music enrichment options will be shared via your child's classroom teachers' communication.

Feeding Our Bears
We’re Feeding Our Bears Monday - Friday from 11:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. at Lincoln School (1102 Orchard Avenue in St. Joseph). The “grab and go” meals containing breakfast and lunch are FREE for all children under the age of 18, regardless of a student’s eligibility for free/reduced lunch.  Please enter on Coles Avenue, off of Langley Avenue.

The Boys and Girls Club of Benton Harbor will also be providing free meals to children 18 years of age and under (children DO NOT need to be Club members). Grab 'N' Go Snack/Dinner meals will be available at the Fettig Youth Campus (600 Nate Wells Sr Drive) and the Joel E. Smilow Teen Center (190 W. Empire Avenue). Meals will be offered Monday - Friday from 3pm until 5pm at each location until April 3, 2020.

Accessing Local Resources
We recognize that many of our families will be in need of support during this unprecedented time. In addition to free “grab and go” meals provided by the district, local food pantries are also a great source of support during financially stressful times.  Please click on the link below to discover local food bank options where your family can access essential resources. Your donations would gladly be accepted and greatly appreciated as well.

Sources of Information
During this time, we all want to do our best to stay up to date with reliable primary source information. St. Joseph Public Schools is committed to helping our families have access to the most reliable and accurate information from our local and state officials. Please visit sjschools.org for more information, including links external resources for dealing with crisis. In addition we recommend the following sources for information:

Schoolstore.com
We have kicked off our Schoolstore.com spring fundraising program.  Booklets containing 11 postcards have gone home with your students over the past week along with information about the program.  If you choose to fill out the postcards, they will be mailed to friends and family members of your choice.  But, THERE IS NO OBLIGATION TO PARTICIPATE OR PURCHASE ANYTHING.  If you do decide to participate our school receives rewards just for turning in the booklets.  All the money raised comes right back to our school/teachers.

Please fill out at least 5 of the postcards.  All Y5-3rd students who fill out the booklet and return it to the office will receive a squishy sticker mystery prize.  All 4th and 5th graders who do the same will receive a LED light with backpack clip.  You can view the promotional video the students were shown at the following link.  www.schoolstore.net/video.  Y5-3rd should click on the “Squishy Stickers Only” icon and 4th and 5th graders should click on the “LED Flashlight Only” icon.

Report Cards and Spring Conferences
Report Cards will come home this week.  Some teachers may hold them for conferences and some may send them as early as today.  By the way, in the spring we conference with about 1/3 of our students.  Hopefully, communication between the classroom and home has been good all year, but please know that you are always welcome to ask questions via email or phone.  You may also request a meeting if a deeper discussion is needed.  As always, thank you for sharing your children with us and for the support you give our school everyday.

YOUTH BASEBALL SIGN UPS
Reminder to get your child signed up to play baseball this spring.  Sign ups end March 13th.  North Lincoln and SJBA have partnered with the City of St. Joseph to handle registrations this year.
