Lincoln School News for November 29 - December 3, 2021

It is hard to believe that December is already knocking on our door. Please be sure your child is dressed for winter weather daily. Students enjoy three recesses outside every day, unless the "real feel" temperature is below 10 degrees.

Labeling your child's gear is incredibly helpful. The lost and found (located outside of the gym) is already growing. Thank you for your help!

We’re excited to invite you to our upcoming Scholastic Book Fair. Hosted by our media center staff, this event is an opportunity for students of all ages to build their home libraries and further their love of reading. As always, all purchases benefit our school.

After missing out on many beloved traditions, our winter Book Fair will be a familiar, welcome, and safe event for our students. Here’s what you need to know about the Fair, which will take place from December 4 - December 10 in our school library/media centers.

  • We will host a Family Shopping Day! Plan on stopping by on Saturday, Dec 4 from 9-12 to pick up your books!

  • Students will have opportunities to purchase books throughout the week at their scheduled library time or during recess breaks.

  • You can view the digital flyer here. Talk it over with your child to see if purchasing books will be part of your family’s plan this time.

  • Our Book Fair offers a cash-free payment option called eWallet. It’s a convenient digital account that your child can use for shopping at our Fair. Grandparents, friends, and others can contribute, too! Cash, checks, and credit cards will also be accepted.

  • If you can’t make it to the Fair, then shop online at our school’s Virtual Book Fair. All orders ship directly to your home, and shipping is free for book orders over $25. Your online orders will also benefit our school.

Visit our Book Fair homepage to learn more and get started with eWallet and online shopping. We’re excited to celebrate our love of books together at the Book Fair.

Drop-Off and Pick-Up Additional Detail for the south entrance

I have received some questions about the pick up and drop off at the south end.  I hope this answers any questions.

The areas below in green are areas where you can park and get out of your car to walk your child to and from the building.

The area in yellow is stop, drop and go or stop, pick-up and go.  This lane is not for parking and leaving your car.

The areas in red are no parking.

Covid Notification and New Procedures Available - 11/8/21

Good Morning Lincoln Family,

I wanted to share this information with you in case you have not yet seen it.  This applies to any student who has been identified as a close contact and is considered quarantined.

You are receiving this communication as we have added a convenient way for your student, currently in quarantine, to remain in school! Thanks to a special partnership with the Berrien RESA and the Berrien County Health Department, and following guidance from the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) the administrative central office of St. Joseph Public Schools will be offering daily rapid tests to our unvaccinated, symptom free students/staff who are in quarantine.  Each morning M-F from 6:30 a.m to 8:00 a.m. rapid testing will be offered to our students (who bring their student ID) in quarantine.  If the student is under 18, the consent form will need to be completed by a parent/guardian. Please arrive no later than 7:45 for testing.

If the test is negative for COVID-19, your student may report to school.  This testing will need to take place each morning of the quarantine period in order to attend school.

Our office is located at 2580 S. Cleveland Avenue in St. Joseph.  Please enter using the door to the left of the front entrance. Please review the following information from Berrien RESA before arriving for testing:

What Happens During the Test?

Similar to the athletic testing that was offered last spring, the test is a self-administered BinaxNOW Antigen Test. Testing will be performed by specifically trained individuals called Health Resource Advocate Testers. They will be wearing appropriate personal protection equipment and following all health and safety procedures as outlined by MDHHS. Test results will be provided 15 minutes after the test is administered.

The Advocate Testers will have an Antigen Testing Ticket that they will complete with the results of the antigen test.  This is your “ticket” back into your district for the day.  Quarantined students and staff will not be able to return to the school building unless they have a ticket indicating that an antigen test was administered and negative that specific day.

What Should I Bring with Me to the Testing Site?

**Please bring a student ID or other document confirming your affiliation with the  school district.

Anyone receiving an antigen test will have to complete an Antigen Testing Consent Form.  **Parents/Guardians will be required to complete the form on the initial day of the test for all minors.

Who Receives the Test Results?

The individual being tested will receive test results about 15 minutes after the test is administered. If the test is negative, the Advocate Tester will mark the negative result on the Antigen Testing Card for the student or staff member to take back to their district. The Antigen Testing Card should be turned into the school office or appropriate COVID-19 school contact person. The individual can resume school or work activities, however, should continue to monitor for symptoms. If the individual is participating in daily testing, they would repeat the process again the next business day.

All negative test results will be uploaded to a secure state-run database.  If the result is positive, the individual will be asked to immediately isolate. The test result will be shared with the sending district’s COVID-19 contact person. This person would then alert the Berrien County Health Department and follow traditional positive case protocols already being followed by the district, including contact tracing. (Employees should contact their supervisors as well to alert them of their absence.)

When and Where is Testing Offered?

Testing sites are open Monday - Friday from 6:30 a.m. to 8 a.m. (unless otherwise posted). The last test of the morning will be administered at 7:45 a.m. to allow for test result development.

  • Berrien RESA Administrative Center

711 St. Joseph Avenue, Berrien Springs, (269) 471-7725

  • St. Joseph Public Schools Administrative Center

2580 S. Cleveland Avenue, St. Joseph, (269) 926-3100

  • InterCare Community Health Network - Benton Harbor Student Health Center

870 Colfax Avenue, Benton Harbor, (269) 605-1277

Who Should I Contact if I Have Questions?

Please contact your student’s building principal. Staff should contact their Human Resource officer or supervisor for more information.

Please, if your student is displaying any symptoms, they should not come for testingl We are happy to offer a test-to-stay option on site as a way to keep our students in school!

Sincerely,

Kelly Gaideski, Assistant Superintendent

Our students will learn about bravery this week during the Positivity Project (P2) lessons. Some guiding questions for you to discuss as a family may be:

How do you, or someone you know, show everyday bravery?

How can bravery impact a group of people?

Play-It-Safe Classroom Presentations
Dear Parents and/or Guardians,

This letter is to inform you that your child’s school has partnered with The Children’s Advocacy Center of Southwest Michigan to offer child abuse prevention education to their students. This program meets the requirements outlined in Erin's Law (signed into law January 2013; www.erinslaw.org) for Michigan students. The research based curriculum we facilitate in the classroom is called Play it Safe!. You can find more information and previews of the lessons at www.PlayitSafe.org. These age-appropriate lessons are facilitated in your child’s classroom with their regular teaching staff present. While the topics vary with age, each elementary level lesson will teach children general concepts like:

  • Identifying the safe adults in a child’s life they can go to if they need help

  • Recognizing 3 different kinds of touches: Safe, Unsafe, and Confusing

  • Using the 3 part safety rule: Say no, Get away, Tell a trusted adult

  • It’s never too late to tell, and child abuse is never the child’s fault

All lessons are presented in a non-threatening way and vary for each grade level. This ensures the information is age and developmentally appropriate. All lessons include the use of a short video and class lecture/discussion.

These lessons are designed to build off each other year after year and reinforce these messages over time. Our hope is that by providing our children with information of how to avoid sexual and physical abuse, report it if it has occurred, or help a friend in need, we can proactively reduce child abuse in our community.

We encourage you to talk openly with your children and if you would like additional resources, please visit our website or call our office. We also offer Child Sexual Abuse Prevention trainings for adults and we would be happy to inform you when these occur.

If you have any concerns about the upcoming lesson your child will participate in, you may contact the Children’s Advocacy Center of Southwest Michigan to ask questions.

Thank you,

Allie Kibler-Campbell
